Fool-Proof Vegetable Fermentation
Emilie Gooch Tweardy
Emilie Gooch Tweardy
Workshop Description:
Emilie will walk through two types of vegetable fermentation – “krauts” and “pickles”. Contrary to popular belief, this doesn’t just refer to cabbage and cucumbers, these terms are simply types of ferments. She’ll demonstrate each type, and help you understand when to use each method. Topics will include troubleshooting and care of your living foods, with an informative handout so you can take all this valuable information home with you. This workshop will give you the confidence to go home and get fermenting! Come prepared with a mason jar or two and take home some of the bounty.

Emilie Gooch Tweardy is a permaculture enthusiast, first generation farmer, mother to 2 little hobbits, food-obsessed nerd, and a creative dabbler. After spending most of her twenties guiding whitewater trips in Colorado and wrapping up school for Natural Resources Management, her early thirties were spent volunteering on farms and in a NY Fermentary. Soon after, she and her husband started ShireFolk Farm, a merry and biodiverse farmstead in Palmyra, VA in 2015. They now raise thousands of pastured animals each year, including chicken, ducks, turkeys, lamb, hogs, sheep, and more. They also have a market garden full of Certified Naturally Grown produce. She has been a partner and lead instructor in the Shenandoah Permaculture Institute since 2016.
