You are how you breathe- How breath impacts posture
Felix Chen
Posture is a topic that has become quite popular in recent years with many people trying to pull themselves into and out of different positions that they deem "good" or "bad" in an effort to improve their quality of life. However, most modalities I've personally witnessed both online and in person lack a core feature, respiration. In terms of activities or habits we engage in everyday, there is none more ubiquitous and necessary to our quality of life and survival than breathing. Our need for air is more urgent than even food or water, and it is one of the few movements we perform even while we sleep. On average we may take 15,000-30,000 breaths every day, and yet this is generally ignored by many in the medical field. Even when breathwork classes are taught, it often offers no more than a surface level understanding of what human respiration really consists of and it's impact on our posture. In this workshop I will break down some of the basic anatomy and relationships between our breath, it's impact on our anatomy and why it's so important for our posture, movement and quality of life. We will focus on the most common compensatory patterns that people may be stuck in and help shed some light on how to address these pains and limitations. I will be using information and techniques taught by the Postural Restoration Institute® (PRI), with their blessing of course.
