The Landless Farmers
Matt & Rachel Palma
Matt and Rachel Palma of Restoration Acres Farm will be leading us on a walking tour of their Pastured Pig operation while sharing the heart and soul of their farm business. As first-generation farmers, they have learned many lessons over the years while fighting to build a successful farm business. While many folks claim that “you can’t make money farming”, the Palma’s have set out to change that. Their goal is to build and maintain a successful, profitable farm business. However, being first-generation farmers means there was no farmland to be passed down. And with land prices on the rise every year, buying land as a startup business is a massive hurdle. But through the inspiration of many who have come before them, Matt and Rachel, the “landless farmers”, have built their business on rented and shared land. While they don’t claim to have it all figured out, their hope is that through their work and dedication the narrative and reality of farming can be changed to one of hope, success and economic sustainability.
